Do you need a straight or curved stairlift?

A straight stairlift normally suits one straight flight of stairs. If the rail has to turn a corner, cross a half landing or continue beyond the top step, a curved model is usually needed. That difference affects the cost, the fitting and whether any part of the lift is likely to be reusable later.

A straight staircase can still have complications

A doorway close to the first step, a radiator on the landing or very little space at the top can change an apparently simple job. The chair needs somewhere safe to park and the user needs room to stand, turn or use a walking aid. Some straight rails can overrun the top or fold away at the bottom, but the proposed arrangement should be shown clearly on the survey drawing.

Why curved rails are made to fit

Curved staircases vary in angle, tread shape and landing height. The rail has to follow that route while keeping the chair level and clear of the steps. Careful measuring is one of the most important parts of the job. Ask whether the rail will be measured manually or digitally, where its supports will be fixed and how closely it will follow the inside or outside of the staircase.

Could two straight lifts be used?

Two straight lifts with a transfer on the half landing can sometimes cost less than one curved lift. That does not make the arrangement suitable for everyone. The user must get off one chair, cross the landing and get onto the other. If the landing is small, balance is poor or falls are the reason for buying a lift, that transfer may defeat the purpose.

New, reconditioned and removable equipment

Straight rails are commonly easier to reuse because they can be cut to length for another suitable flight. A curved rail is made for one staircase and may have little reuse value elsewhere. Reconditioned curved equipment may still be possible when a new rail is supplied. Ask exactly which parts are new, what has been tested and what guarantee applies.

Compare the proposed layouts, not just prices

Two quotations can describe different solutions. One may stop on the final tread; another may carry the user onto the landing. One may include a powered swivel or hinged rail that the other omits. Ask each company to explain the complete journey from approaching the chair to leaving it safely at the other end.

Where the rail finishes matters

A rail that finishes on the final tread may be compact, but the user can still be close to the open staircase while getting off. An overrun can carry the chair farther onto a landing, although it needs space and may affect a doorway. At the bottom, the rail needs to bring the footrest to a height from which the user can stand securely. Ask the surveyor to show both finishing positions and explain any compromise. A few centimetres on a drawing can make a noticeable difference to the real transfer. Curved rails are commonly individual to the staircase, so confirm measurements before manufacture begins and understand the cancellation terms. With either type, check charging points at normal parking positions and ask whether leaving the chair elsewhere runs down the batteries. If the stairs include tapered winders, compare inside and outside rail positions: one may leave more walking width while the other gives a smoother approach. The company should explain the reason for its proposed side rather than describing it as the only possibility.
