Would a powered wheelchair suit your daily journeys?

A powered wheelchair can give someone much more independent movement when propelling a manual chair is difficult or impossible. It has to fit the person's body, controls and daily surroundings, not just look comfortable in a showroom. A useful trial includes the home, outdoor routes and whatever transport will be used.

Seating is not an optional extra

A person who spends much of the day in the chair may need specialist pressure care, posture support or powered positioning. Seat width alone is not enough. Clinical assessment can consider skin risk, pain, tone and the ability to operate controls. Altering cushions or supports without advice can change both posture and stability.

Controls can be adapted

A standard joystick suits many users, but not everyone has the hand control or movement it requires. Alternative positions and control methods may be possible. The user needs to stop accurately, judge doorways and manage slopes. Training in a realistic setting is more valuable than a brief demonstration on a level showroom floor.

Will it move around the home?

Measure narrow doors, corridors, bedside spaces and bathroom approaches. Turning circles and footplates matter. A chair that performs well outdoors may be too large indoors. Some people use different chairs for different settings, but transfers, storage and funding then need careful thought.

Transporting the chair

Powered wheelchairs can be very heavy. Check whether the vehicle and any hoist or ramp are designed for the exact chair. If the person will travel seated in the chair, a suitable wheelchair-accessible vehicle and approved restraint arrangement are needed. Seek specialist advice rather than improvising with luggage straps.

Repairs and contingency planning

Ask what happens if the chair fails at home or away, how quickly parts can be supplied and whether a temporary replacement is available. Keep batteries charged according to the instructions. If the chair is essential for getting out of bed or reaching the toilet, discuss a backup plan with the provider and care team.

Arrange a handover that covers more than steering

The supplier should explain charging, freewheel settings, manual movement, tyre care and what warning lights mean. Family or carers may need to know how to release the motors and push the chair safely, but the user should remain in control of decisions wherever possible. Record important settings before transport or servicing. If the chair has powered tilt or leg functions, learn the safe order for using them near tables, vehicles and doorways. Keep contact details for seating problems as well as mechanical faults. Battery range should be treated cautiously. User weight, powered seating, hills, surfaces and cold weather all affect it. Learn what the battery display means on this model and avoid routinely running it nearly empty. Kerb-climbing ability does not make every kerb safe; use dropped crossings where possible. If the chair has tie-down points for transport, ask the supplier to identify them clearly. Modifications, trays and oxygen holders should be fitted so they do not interfere with controls or approved restraint points.
